Panda House

Panda Hosue (5 of 5)

The Copenhagen Zoo is getting pandas ๐Ÿ™‚ In a collaboration between the Zoo and the Copenhagen LEGO Store I was asked to build a model of the home built for the pandas, called the Panda House, to be exhibited in the LEGO Store. This build is now complete and I can share about what I’ve been doing the past month and a half ๐Ÿ™‚

The build itself was technically quite complicated. There are almost no straight lines anywhere, and the whole building resembles the yin and yang. The build was also to be built in minifig scale, but needed to fit within a certain display case, which meant the proportions were a bit skewed and the pandas living area looks a bit more cramped than it will be in real life. I had to skip a lot of the trees as well, for visibility purposes, but made up for the loss of greenery by adding more ground vegetation.

This is also the biggest build I’ve built so far, with an estimate of about 10,000 pieces due to some pretty bit intensive techniques being used. The building process was also long, and there was quite a lot of experimentation needed, especially for the round walkway which needed to be flexible but also sturdy enough to hold without too much support.

It has been a fun challenge to build, and I’m really happy with how it turned out ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you like it too! And if you live in or around Copenhagen you can check the build out in the LEGO Store, and of course check out the pandas at the Zoo ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Very, very well done Full Plate! Congratulations on the commission! And on the result! I can see how this fitted your work. I think I recognize the tree from one of your tutorials. The walkway is just great! I wonder how you made it on the bottom side. I live 45 mins from CPH so I hope I can have a look one day

    • Thank you Frank! Yeah, it was quite nice to be asked for such a project, and the organic shapes and nature fits my building style quite well. Yeah, I have a tutorial for something similar to that tree ๐Ÿ™‚ The walkway was the real challenge, and I will probably show it in a separate post someday as it is a bit hard to explain in words. Hope you get a chance to see it ๐Ÿ™‚
